Diplomatic Talks for Schengen Visa Exemption for Gulf Citizens

In the latest diplomatic developments, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has called for tangible progress in negotiations regarding the exemption of its citizens from visa requirements for entry into the Schengen area. This request was made during a meeting of the EU Political and Security Committee (PSC) on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, in Brussels.

According to a statement issued by the GCC General Secretariat, Jasem Al-Budaiwi, Secretary-General of the GCC, emphasized during the meeting that the joint statement from the recent GCC-EU Summit reflects the commitment of both parties to establishing a visa-free, secure, and mutually beneficial travel system between the Gulf states and the Schengen region.
He noted that this political support stems from a shared belief in the importance of facilitating travel, provided that the required standards are met. According to him, this decision will strengthen international relations and create valuable economic, cultural, and educational opportunities for both parties.
Negotiations on Free Trade Agreement
Regarding economic cooperation, Al-Budaiwi reaffirmed that negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the GCC and the EU remain a key component of their bilateral economic cooperation. He stated that despite past challenges, both sides recognize the significant benefits of a comprehensive trade agreement.
Cooperation on Humanitarian Issues and Conflict Resolution
Al-Budaiwi also highlighted the effective role of the GCC and the EU in addressing international crises, noting that both parties are closely collaborating to resolve humanitarian issues and international conflicts, particularly concerning Palestine and Gaza.
He further praised the ninth Brussels Conference on Syria, describing it as a crucial step toward garnering international support and aiding the Syrian people.

The GCC Secretary-General stressed the importance of continued close cooperation to manage crises and prevent new tensions. He proposed focusing on strengthening dialogue and economic cooperation instead of confrontation, through initiatives such as the GCC-EU Joint Action Program.
He added that Gulf energy resources and European green technologies can complement each other, leading to sustainable development. Furthermore, he emphasized the necessity of cultural and educational collaboration to strengthen friendly ties between the two regions.
