Sultan of Oman Sends Condolences to the Vatican on the Passing of Pope Francis

His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman has extended his heartfelt condolences to Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the acting head of the Vatican, on the passing of Pope Francis, expressing deep sympathy to the people of the Vatican and all Christians worldwide.

A Reformist Pope from Buenos Aires to Rome
Pope Francis, the first Latin American and Jesuit Pope, passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, following complications from a severe respiratory illness. His sudden death came just a day after he appeared in St. Peter’s Square for Easter Sunday, waving to the crowd from his Popemobile. While the official cause of death remains undisclosed, media sources suggest a possible stroke or cerebral hemorrhage.
Known for his humility, reformist views, and strong advocacy for the marginalized, Pope Francis led the Catholic Church from 2013 until his passing. He championed interfaith dialogue, financial transparency, and gender inclusion within the Vatican, while also facing criticism from both conservative and progressive factions.

Farewell Ceremonies and Future of the Vatican
His funeral will be held on April 26 at the Vatican, and per his will, he will be laid to rest in Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica in Rome. The public will be allowed to pay respects starting Wednesday, when his body will be displayed at St. Peter’s Basilica.
Countries such as Argentina and Brazil have declared seven days of national mourning, while world leaders including Putin, Trump, Zelensky, and Meloni praised the Pope’s legacy as a unifier and advocate of peace.
Meanwhile, the secret conclave to elect the next pope is expected to take place within 15–20 days. Around 135 cardinals are eligible to vote, the majority of whom were appointed by Pope Francis, increasing the likelihood of a progressive successor continuing his legacy.
This marks the end of an era in the Catholic Church—and the beginning of a pivotal decision that will shape the spiritual direction of 1.4 billion followers worldwide.
