16,000 Kilometers of Roads Paved in Oman Last Year (2024)

Eng. Yusuf bin Abdullah Al-Mujaini, Director General of Roads and Land Transport at the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, announced that the ministry is implementing several major infrastructure projects as part of the Tenth Five-Year Plan. He emphasized that road development plays a crucial role in enhancing economic, tourism, and logistical growth, facilitating inter-provincial connectivity, and supporting Oman’s vision for economic diversification.
Oman has made remarkable progress in road infrastructure in recent years. The Ministry of Transport has focused on creating a modern, expansive network of roads designed and constructed to meet international standards.
Key Projects in 2024
- Budget Allocation:
- Over RO300 million was allocated in 2024 to various road projects across Oman in collaboration with the Tender Board.
- Major Projects:
- Dualization of Sultan Said bin Taimur Road (Adam-Thumrait):
This project spans from Wilayat Haima to Thumrait and includes a dual carriageway, safety barriers, road markings, and underground culverts.- Three contractors have been assigned, and construction is expected to begin in Q1 2025.
- Al Batinah Coastal Road (Sultan Taimur bin Faisal):
Progress: 4%. Construction is advancing according to the ministry’s timeline. - Dibba-Lima-Khasab Road (Sultan Faisal bin Turki):
This strategic project has achieved 27% completion, with temporary service roads fully operational to facilitate construction work.
- Dualization of Sultan Said bin Taimur Road (Adam-Thumrait):
Additional Infrastructure Projects
- Sharqiyah Expressway (Sultan Turki bin Said):
Progress: 20%. A new 4-kilometer section has been opened to traffic. - Wadi Bani Khalid Road:
The project is in the design phase and is expected to commence construction within six months. - Linking Sultan Qaboos Road (Batinah Highway) to Al Batinah Expressway:
With 90% progress, the project is nearing completion and is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025.

Achievements in 2024
- By the end of 2024, the total paved roads in Oman reached 16,000 kilometers.
- An additional 17,000 kilometers of road projects, including rehabilitation and upgrading, are in progress.
