Discovery of 7 New Lizard Species in Oman

The Environment Authority of Oman has successfully identified 7 new lizard species in North Al Sharqiyah Governorate. These newly recorded species include:

  • Yellow-spotted monitor lizard
  • Snake-tailed lizard with fringed toes
  • Omani Giakari lizard
  • Wide rock gecko
  • Eastern Arabian desert gecko

  • Arabian gecko

Distribution of Lizard Habitats

These species have been identified across various habitats in Oman. Areas such as mountains and valleys are the primary habitats for these lizards, while some species are limited to plains and desert regions. This variation reflects the unique environmental adaptations of each species and the direct influence of climatic factors like extreme heat and drought on their behavior and distribution.

Objective of the Project: Biodiversity Conservation

The project aims to collect accurate and updated data and create geographical maps of lizard habitats. The information gathered will support the development of national plans to protect endangered species and address challenges like climate change and habitat destruction.

Oman: A Treasure Trove of Biodiversity

According to the Atlas of Terrestrial Reptiles in Oman, over 101 reptile species have been recorded in the country, including 80 lizard species. Among these, 20 species are classified as endemic to Oman, meaning they are found nowhere else in the world.
