National Day of Oman Changed by Sultan Haitham’s Decree

Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, during his speech on Saturday, January 11, marking the fifth anniversary of his reign, announced that the National Day of Oman would be changed from November 18 to November 20.

Sultan Haitham’s Statement About the Decision

In his speech, the Sultan stated:

“We hereby announce that November 20 of every year shall be the National Day of the Sultanate of Oman. This is the day when the Al Busaidi family proudly began their service to this dear land in 1744, led by Imam Ahmad bin Said Al Busaidi. Imam Ahmad bin Said raised the flag of unity for the Omani nation, achieving complete sovereignty over Oman, and ensuring freedom and dignity for the honorable people of this country through great efforts and sacrifices.”

Reason Behind the Change

The change honors November 20, 1744, the day when the rule of the Al Busaidi dynasty in Oman began under Imam Ahmad bin Said, and it has continued ever since.

November 18, which previously marked Oman’s National Day, is the birth anniversary of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said. However, Sultan Haitham emphasized that November 20 symbolizes the historical beginning of the Al Busaidi leadership and represents Oman’s enduring sovereignty and unity.

Significance of the Change

This decision reflects Sultan Haitham’s commitment to Oman’s historical heritage and national identity. By recognizing this pivotal date, the Sultan seeks to highlight the historical role of the Al Busaidi dynasty in the foundation and development of Oman, while fostering a sense of pride and unity among its citizens.
