Oman Air Issues Statement on Employee ‘Layoffs’

Oman Air, the national carrier of Oman, issued an official statement on Thursday clarifying its ongoing transformation strategy. The airline explained that the transformation involves a comprehensive organizational restructuring aimed at improving operational efficiency and ensuring long-term financial stability.
Clarification on Layoff Rumors
Oman Air strongly denied rumors of 1,000 employee layoffs, stressing that no Omani employees have been terminated as part of the restructuring. However, the airline acknowledged that 365 surplus employees were impacted by the changes. These employees were offered severance packages as a token of appreciation for their service, with at least four weeks provided for them to make a final decision, ensuring no rights were infringed.
Organizational Transformation and Long-Term Goals
The transformation strategy includes measures to streamline costs, enhance the airline’s network and fleet, and renegotiate key contracts. The restructuring also involved reviewing the organizational structure to identify the optimal workforce size and necessary skills for long-term sustainability aligned with the airline’s future needs.
New Organizational Structure at Oman Air
Oman Air has been developing a new organizational structure over the past 18 months, aligned with industry best practices and the airline’s evolving needs. This structure has been implemented in phases.
Growth in Omanization Rate
Since the start of the transformation, Oman Air has made significant progress in increasing its Omanization rate, which has risen from 74% to 78%. Additionally, the Omanization rate in most departments has exceeded 90%, with plans to increase this further in other areas.
Oman Air’s organizational transformation is not only aligned with national development goals but also focused on ensuring operational efficiency and long-term success for the airline.
