Oman at UN High-Level Forum: Calls for Science-Based Climate Action and Global Environmental Justice

A high-level delegation from the Sultanate of Oman, led by Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority and President of the upcoming UNEA-7, participated in the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development held at UN Headquarters in New York.

Focus on Scientific Solutions for the 2030 Agenda
Held under the theme “Promoting sustainable, inclusive, science-based and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda”, the forum brought together global leaders to address major challenges such as climate change, inequality, and economic instability through integrated, data-driven strategies.

Oman’s Address: Science-Driven Policy and Circular Economy Emphasis
In his official statement, Dr. Al Amri emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive, science-based environmental policies, particularly ahead of UNEA-7 in Nairobi this December. He stressed the link between environmental health and public well-being, advocating for integrated approaches such as the One Health principle to tackle global challenges.

He further urged nations to adopt circular economy models for sustainable consumption and production, calling for their inclusion in national strategies. He also called for accelerated international cooperation to finalize and ratify key agreements, including those on plastic pollution and marine biodiversity protection beyond national jurisdictions.

Call for Financial Reform and Environmental Justice
Dr. Al Amri underlined the need to reform the international financial system to unlock innovative, sustainable financing. He highlighted the importance of involving conflict-affected regions in sustainability agendas and emphasized the role of environmental justice in achieving global peace and development.

Diplomatic Engagements and Side Events
On the sidelines, Dr. Al Amri held high-level meetings with the President of the UN General Assembly and Hungary’s Environment Minister, exploring Oman’s role in advancing global environmental diplomacy and preparations for UNEA-7.

Oman also co-hosted a side event with the Environment Society of Oman, focusing on empowering youth in climate action and marine protection, aligned with SDGs 13, 14, and 17.
