Oman Unveils Plans for Multi-Million Dollar Film City to Boost Cultural Industries

The Ministry of Sports, Culture, and Youth in Oman has unveiled plans for the construction of an advanced ‘Film City’ with an estimated investment of OMR12 million ($31.2 million). This initiative, stemming from the outcomes of Creative and Cultural Workshops in March, aims to enhance Oman’s cultural and innovative industries.

The location and goals of building a “Film City” in Oman

According to the local newspaper Oman Observer, the proposed “Film City” project, which is to be located in Khazaen, Barka, is envisioned as a regional hub for film production. The project is expected to create significant job opportunities, providing more than 100 jobs to Omanis in the first year. The facility will provide comprehensive services in all aspects of film production, from pre-production to post-production, making Oman a major player in the region’s entertainment sector.

Nader Al Rawahy, the Ministry’s representative in the Oman Vision 2040 Follow-up Unit, emphasized the project’s potential to transform the local film industry and attract international productions, deeming it a catalyst for creating a vibrant cultural ecosystem in Oman.

Film City Strategy

The announcement of the Film City is part of a broader strategy to invest in and empower Oman’s cultural sector, as reported by the Oman News Agency (ONA). The Creativity and Culture Workshops held earlier this year paved the way for launching various initiatives, including:

Aisha bint Mohammed Al Siyafi, Deputy Chairperson of the National Program for Development of Investment and Exports, underscored the Ministry’s vision for decentralized cultural development, stating, “Our goal is to attract creative talents and investors to various regions across Oman.”

Proposed Projects

To achieve this goal, the Ministry has outlined several initiatives, including:

These projects exemplify Oman’s commitment to fostering a diversified and resilient economy through arts and culture, aligning with the broader goals of Oman Vision 2040. Strategic investments in creative and cultural infrastructure will help amplify the country’s cultural footprint while driving economic growth and job creation.
