The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has issued an official clarification following the circulation of information on social media claiming that “violations recorded by traffic signal cameras are now being activated to detect mobile phone usage and seatbelt violations.”
In its statement, the ROP confirmed:
“Any updates or changes in how traffic violations are detected or enforced — including the scope of what signal cameras monitor — will be officially communicated through verified ROP channels.“
How Traffic Cameras Work in Oman:
- Oman has installed intelligent traffic monitoring cameras at major intersections and highways to detect:
- Red-light running
- Speeding
- Mobile phone use while driving
- Not wearing seatbelts
- These systems transmit footage to the traffic control center, where data is verified before fines are issued automatically.
This system is part of Oman’s efforts to enhance road safety, reduce risky driving behavior, and advance intelligent traffic enforcement systems.
