Authorities in Oman have dismantled 16 illegal tourist camps in Bandar Al Khairan and Yiti as part of efforts to regulate tourism and protect the environment.

Preserving Coastal Areas and Tourism Regulations

In an official statement, Muscat Municipality stated:
“In a joint operation aimed at preserving the natural beauty and safety of coastal areas, Muscat Municipality, in collaboration with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and the Royal Oman Police, cracked down on illegal tourist camps in Bandar Al Khairan and Yiti.”

The Importance of Adhering to Tourism Regulations

Officials emphasized that complying with tourism regulations is mandatory and urged visitors to stay only in authorized campsites to avoid penalties and contribute to environmental preservation. They also warned that further enforcement actions will follow, advising tourism operators and individuals to comply with regulations to avoid legal consequences.

Bandar Al Khairan: A Protected Ecotourism Zone

Bandar Al Khairan has been designated as an eco-tourism zone under Royal Decree No. 45/2007, which prohibits economic, tourism, or other development activities in the area. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism oversees the area to ensure that environmental standards are maintained.

New Camping Regulations in Muscat

In December 2024, the Muscat Governor’s Office introduced new camping regulations for the winter season to ensure a safe and environmentally responsible camping experience. According to these regulations:
Camping for more than 48 hours requires a permit.
A renewable seven-day permit requires an insurance fee of RO 100.
Camps must be at least 10 meters from beaches and 5 meters apart.
Camping in fishing zones and security-restricted areas is prohibited.

Requirements for Authorized Campsites

Camps must display their permit number.
Entry and parking must be organized.
Only low-noise generators are allowed.
Heavy machinery cannot be used for site preparation.
Permits are non-transferable.

Penalties for Violations

Camping without a permit results in a RO 200 fine.
Improper site use or environmental violations incur a RO 50 fine.
Repeat offenders will be immediately removed from the site.

With these regulations, Omani authorities aim to protect the environment while ensuring a responsible and enjoyable tourism experience.
