Security Concerns Delay Implementation of Unified GCC Visa

Oman’s Minister of Heritage and Tourism has confirmed that the implementation of the unified visa for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries has been delayed due to security concerns and differences in national perspectives.

During the eighth regular session of the Shura Council held in March 2025, Salim bin Mohammed Al Mahrouqi stated stated that although the initiative was formally approved in 2023, it remains under study and is unlikely to be implemented in the near future.

“The unified GCC visa is still in the research phase,” Al Mahrouqi told council members, highlighting unresolved issues regarding security and coordination among the six GCC nations — Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

The visa system, often compared to Europe’s Schengen Area, is designed to allow seamless travel across member states with a single visa.

Proponents argue that the system would enhance the region’s attractiveness to international tourists and foster stronger economic cooperation.

However, behind closed doors, concerns over data sharing, security protocols, and immigration control are reportedly hindering progress, despite public backing from tourism officials.
