Speeding and Negligence Identified as Major Causes of Traffic Accidents in Oman

The National Centre for Statistics and Information of Oman has released a new report highlighting the alarming increase in road traffic accidents in 2023. According to the report, speeding and negligence are the primary causes of these incidents.
In 2023, the number of fatalities due to traffic accidents reached 595, up from 532 in 2022. The number of injuries also increased from 2,080 in 2022 to 2,129 in 2023. The total number of traffic accidents rose from 1,877 in 2022 to 2,040 in 2023.
Speeding remains the leading cause of deaths and injuries from traffic accidents. In 2023, speeding resulted in 304 deaths and 1,037 injuries. Negligence, the second leading cause, led to 103 deaths and 245 injuries in 2023.
Other contributing factors include reckless driving, improper overtaking, and failure to maintain safe distances, which also played significant roles in the occurrence of these accidents.
