Today, Minerals Development Oman (MDO) officially inaugurated the Mazoon Copper Project, marking the start of one of the most strategic ventures in Oman’s mining sector development.
Project Specifications:
Location:
The project, operated by Mazoon Mining Company, a subsidiary of MDO, is situated in the Wilayat of Yanqul, Al Dhahirah Governorate, covering an exploration and extraction area of 20 square kilometers.
Resources and Mines:
The Mazoon project aims to extract 22.9 million tons of copper ore from five open-pit mines named Asghar, Hail Al-Safil, Al-Bashair, Al-Jadid, and Al-Rakah. These mines are rich in mineral resources, and it is anticipated that the project will become a key copper supplier in the region, meeting the demands of both local and international markets.
Processing and Production Capacity:
Mazoon can process 2.5 million tons of copper ore annually, producing 115,000 tons of copper concentrate with a purity of 21.5%. This production capacity aligns with Oman’s strategy to expand its mining sector and increase mineral output.
Infrastructure and Technology:
The Mazoon project includes comprehensive infrastructure, such as:
- Processing plant: Spanning 560,000 square meters, it will oversee the initial crushing, grinding, and flotation processing of copper ore.
- Waste Management Unit: Ensuring safe and environmentally-friendly waste management.
- Administrative and Residential Facilities for employee welfare.
- Independent Power Station and water lines to ensure operational sustainability.
Operational Processes:
Upon starting commercial operations, production processes will encompass surface mining, initial crushing, ore grinding, followed by flotation processing to produce copper concentrate. The company plans to employ state-of-the-art technology to increase efficiency and minimize environmental impact.
Timeline and Economic Development:
Construction activities are set to commence in the first quarter of 2025, with commercial operations expected by the first quarter of 2027, positioning the project as a key copper producer in the near future.
Social Impact and Omanization Rate:
With a high Omanization rate of 70%, the project is committed to developing Omani talent and generating new job opportunities, contributing to the local economy through direct and indirect employment.
Strategic Goals and Contribution to National Economy:
By utilizing advanced technology for copper extraction and processing, the Mazoon Copper Project aims to become a significant economic contributor to Oman. In addition to generating sustainable economic value, it will boost Oman’s copper exports, contribute to income diversification, and reinforce Oman’s position as a regional hub in the mining industry.
