Oman to Ban Import of Plastic Bags Starting September 1

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP), in collaboration with the Directorate General of Customs, has announced that the importation of plastic bags into Oman will be banned starting September 1, 2024. This decision is based on Ministerial Decision No. 519/2022 and encompasses both biodegradable and non-biodegradable plastic bags made from ethylene polymers.
The ban targets various types of bags, including shopping bags, waste bags, food packaging bags, and medical use bags. The primary objective is to reduce plastic pollution and enhance environmental sustainability within the country. The Environment Authority (EA) has also decided to gradually phase out all forms of plastic shopping bags as part of this initiative.
This regulation is part of a broader strategy to mitigate the environmental challenges posed by plastic waste and promote a sustainable future for Oman.
