After UAE’s Official Launch of the Digital Dirham, Oman to Introduce a Digital Rial Soon

The Central Bank of Oman has announced that it will soon launch a digital version of the Omani Rial, marking a major step toward financial digitization and aligning with regional and global trends.

The announcement was made by Ruqaya bint Hamad Al-Khanbushiya, Acting Director of Legal and Policy Affairs at the Central Bank, during a radio interview aired yesterday on “Al-Wisal Forum” hosted by journalist Salem Al-Amri.

Al-Khanbushiya emphasized that the project is part of a broader vision to enhance payment infrastructure, financial inclusion, and data security in the Sultanate.

The announcement comes shortly after the United Arab Emirates officially launched its “Digital Dirham,” positioning itself among the Gulf’s pioneers in adopting central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). Oman now appears poised to enter this field and begin a new era of financial innovation.
