Oman’s First Saffron Farm Opens in Al Jabal Al Akhdar

Oman’s first commercial-scale saffron farm has officially started operations in Al Jabal Al Akhdar. The company, Saffron Oman, aims to introduce the first batch of locally grown saffron by the end of 2024.
Ahmed Ali al Hanshi, the project owner, explained in an interview that the goal is to introduce new crops to Oman at a commercial level. “Saffron was chosen due to its high value as one of the most expensive spices in the world and the limited number of countries producing it,” he stated.
The farm spans over 25,000 square meters and was strategically placed in Al Jabal Al Akhdar due to its ideal climate for saffron cultivation. Over half a million saffron bulbs, weighing more than nine tonnes, were imported from the Netherlands for the initial planting phase.
Al Hanshi further explained that the farm plans to produce both saffron and saffron bulbs. “The idea is to import bulbs only once and then multiply them annually on the farm to ensure self-sufficiency in the future,” he added.
