Oman’s Plastic Bag Ban Enters Phase 3 | Full Schedule Until 2027

As of today, Oman’s Environment Authority (EA) has officially launched Phase 3 of the nationwide plastic bag ban, in line with Ministerial Decision No. 8/2024. This initiative is part of the country’s long-term environmental strategy to eliminate single-use plastic bags by 2027.

Who is affected in Phase 3?
This phase targets the following business categories:

• Grocery stores and supermarkets
• Fruit and vegetable vendors, packing outlets
• Bakeries and confectionery shops
• Gift shops and traditional Omani sweet sellers

Environmental Goals
The initiative aims to combat plastic pollution, protect terrestrial and marine ecosystems, and promote the use of eco-friendly alternatives such as fabric and paper bags. It aligns with Oman’s international commitments under the Stockholm and Basel Conventions.

Complete Ban Schedule Until 2027

Penalties and Enforcement
Under Article 3 of the decision:

• Violators will face fines ranging from OMR 50 to OMR 1,000
• Repeat offenses within a month will incur double the fine
• Businesses are obligated to follow the schedule strictly

Field Awareness and Alternative Distribution
The EA, in collaboration with government and private sectors, is conducting field visits, distributing eco-friendly bag alternatives, and sharing awareness materials with businesses.

With Phase 3 now underway and full implementation planned by 2027, Oman strengthens its position as a regional leader in plastic pollution reduction and environmental sustainability.
